I was approached by the organizers of parachute expeditions to Kamchatka Alena and Vasily. Their target audience is foreigners who are ready to skydive (on their own or in tandem) and enjoy nature. Therefore, initially we decided to make the site in English.
In the future, the customers planned to add information to the site on their own, so I suggested making a site on the Tilda platform (on it, in the future, you can easily edit / add information yourself, without involving a designer every time).
Site structure and technical requirements:
In order to compose the structure of the site, I analyzed other sites about expeditions (what points are placed on the main page and in what order, what additional pages are there) and the material that the customers had.
There were also some technical requirements from Vasily: enhanced protection "I'm not a robot", connecting a domain and redirecting from another existing domain (.ru) to a connected one (.com).
Applications for participation had to be collected in three different forms: for solo jumpers, for tandem jumps and for accompanying (those who do not jump). In addition, a form was needed to collect applications for sponsorship.
A slide from a commercial offer to create a website about the structure and necessary functions
Among the materials provided by the customers were mock-ups of T-shirts of the participants of previous expeditions with printed inscriptions. Thus, the selection of the font was reduced to the search for a similar font, both in English and in Russian.
After going through a lot of options, we settled on Neucha for headings and sans-serif for text blocks.
To create the color scheme of the site, the customers and I were inspired by images of lava (associative series: Kamchatka - volcanoes - lava). In the materials that Alena and Vasily provided me, there were lava textures: one with hot, still orange lava, the second with already cooled down (in gray).
Thus, the site turned out in dark colors (gray-brown) with light texts and orange accents (buttons, links, separators).
For the main screen, a video from the last expedition was immediately chosen, which perfectly conveys the atmosphere of such trips.
An interesting point: the greatest difficulties arose with the Team section with photos of participants. At first, the organizers did not want to devote so much space to this section and place their own photos there, but later they agreed and also added an option for registrants - when filling out the form, you can upload your photo and agree to its placement in the team section for all those who will travel in the current year!)
After agreeing on all the blocks and texts for them, prototypes of each page in Figma were developed. I developed the design in Figma only for the main one. The rest of the pages were collected immediately in Tilda, to save time in completing the work.
The main page of the site gradually answers all questions about the expedition: for whom is it? Where exactly are we going and what are we going to do there? who are we jumping with? etc.
More information is available on separate pages:
Page About Kamchatka
Page about the cost of the trip and accommodation options
Page about tandem jumps
Page about previous trips
Also, since we collect personal data, the site has placed a privacy policy, the need for which is required by law.
While I was creating pages in Russian, the clients were translating into English.
Therefore, after creation, I duplicated all pages in the second language, and made all the necessary links - transitions between pages.
Also I connected te domain, completed basic SEO setup, set up the display of the site on various devices (responsive design), connected 4 forms of data collection and email notifications about applications, set up an enhanced “I'm not a robot” check mode, set up redirects from another domain (customers purchased two and it was a pity one of leave them free).
It is always a pleasure to work with people who have bright eyes, with enthusiasts of their work. While working on the site www.skydivevolcanoeskamchatka.com, although this is supposedly more our brainchild, it was Zhenya, the designer, who was our locomotive. She did not let us go into silence for more than three days. And where we still calmed down, translating a large amount of material, Zhenya turned on and translated part of the material for us, which was very helpful!
Despite the time zones separating us, Zhenya was regularly in touch, sometimes even in several instant messengers at once. On a cold February day, she found time to meet with us when we were passing through Khabarovsk. It was great to see this positive, interesting, enthusiastic person live.
The site that we wanted for ourselves for a very long time, but did not quite imagine how it could turn out and how technically all our wishes could be realized, was born with Zhenya quickly and easily! We had almost no disagreements on design, fonts, material layout. On the contrary, the phrase from my project manager sounded too often - as a rule, after the next video presentation (this is a kind of designer's report on the stage of work done, instead of long letters - a short video with a screen demonstration): "Don't interfere with Zhenya's work, she does everything right!" The only thing that caused a heated debate was the background of the color of volcanic lava, which we chose with our hearts, contrary to some design rules, which Zhenya tried to convey to us, but at one point gave up.
Our site about parachute expeditions to Kamchatka turned out to be light, modern, original, beautiful, informative, and, as we all think, with this quality it is quite inexpensive for us. We thank Evgenia for the pleasant work on the project! Because Our expeditions are annual, we agreed on a subscription service to Zhenya and we expect to regularly update our site with her hands.
